Logging residue chipping options for short rotation poplar plantations

چکیده
Short rotation poplar plantations grow on flat and even terrain, the interrow spacing is wide enough for easy machine access. If terrain firm enough, one may consider moving classic roadside chipping operation directly into field (i.e., chipping), thus saving wood extraction cost. This study compared efficiency cost of conducted with exactly same equipment, to assess benefits offered by versatile deployment a standard operation, whereby can be moved inside stand whenever conditions are suitable. The was at 12 sample plots, containing about truck load chips each approximately 11 bone-dry tons or BDT). Plots were arranged as alternate windrows 8.5 ha field. Data collected whole supply chain, from factory. factory located 14 km Delivered 53 € BDT-1 70 chipping, respectively, i.e., 1/3 more expensive than if latter included additional forwarding residues roadside. chipper-truck used test could not cope small scattered residue piles (32 BDT ha-1), cumbersome reposition maneuver became main hurdle efficient operation. Further improvements might achieved pre-bunching residues, introducing dedicated chipper bundling taking bundles centralized chipping.

Harvesting Short-Rotation Poplar Plantations for Biomass Production
Nacrtak In Italy, short rotation forest has become very popular in recent years, with over 4,000 hectares already planted – almost exclusively with clone poplar. The study models the performance of modified forage harvesters on a range of short-rotation poplar plantations, identifies technical obstacles to the deployment of these machines and suggests solutions that may expand the capability of...
متن کاملA Single-pass Reduced Tillage Technique for the Establishment of Short-Rotation Poplar (Populus spp.) Plantations
In Italy, there has been a significant increase of the areas cultivated with short-rotation forestry (SRF) poplar (Populus spp.) for the production of lignocellulosic biomass. This species has been generally introduced on soils managed with conventional farming practices that led to the formation of a hardpan. This constitutes a serious obstacle for root development and water availability, whic...
متن کاملHarvesting Systems and Costs for Short Rotation Poplar
The objective of this review is to compare the cost of coppice and longer rotation poplar harvesting technology. Harvesting technology for short rotation poplar has evolved over the years to address both coppice harvest and single-stem harvest systems. Two potential approaches for coppice harvesting are modified forage harvesters and modified mulcher-balers. Both of these systems effectively ha...
متن کاملNitrogen supply and demand in short-rotation sweetgum plantations
Intensive management is crucial for optimizing hardwood plantation success, and nitrogen (N) nutrition management is one of the most important practices in intensive management. Because management of short-rotation woody crop plantations is a mixture of row-crop agriculture and plantation forestry, we tested the usefulness of an agronomic budget modified for deciduous perennial trees for estima...
متن کاملEvaluating ecosystem processes in willow short rotation coppice bioenergy plantations
Despite a growing body of research linking bioenergy cultivation to changing patterns of biodiversity, there has been remarkably little interest in how bioenergy plantations affect key ecosystem processes underpinning important ecosystem services. In this study, we compare how the processes of predation by ground arthropods and litter decomposition varied between Short Rotation Coppice (SRC) wi...
